Iako je premijera bila zakazana za listopad ove godine, Warner Bros. i New Line odlučili su odgoditi Mortal Kombat 2 za čak sedam mjeseci. Film će tako umjesto ove jeseni, u kina stići tek 15. svibnja 2026. godine.
Prema izvještaju Deadlinea, odluka je donesena iz financijskih razloga – listopad tradicionalno nije snažan mjesec za kino blagajne, dok se svibanj smatra puno isplativijim terminom. Zanimljivo je da su testne projekcije filma bile vrlo pozitivne, pa se vjeruje da će bolji datum premijere omogućiti i veći komercijalni uspjeh.
Inače, ako niste ispratili vijesti vezane za Mortal Kombat 2 u filmu se vraćaju poznati likova, a radnja istog prati njihovu borbu protiv Shao Kahna. Najveća novost u glumačkoj postavi je Karl Urban (The Boys), koji tumači legendarnog Johnnyja Cagea. Film ponovno režira Simon McQuoid, redatelj prvog Mortal Kombata iz 2021. godine, a scenarij potpisuje Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight). Uz Urbana, u filmu glume Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, te Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Joe Taslim (Bi-Han) i Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion).
Prvi Mortal Kombat film iz 2021. bio je solidan uspjeh na streaming servisima i u kinima, unatoč pandemiji i mješovitim kritikama. S obzirom na to da je nastavak dobio više budžeta i jaču glumačku postavu, očekivanja fanova su velika, a hoće li ona biti ispunjena – morat ćemo ipak malo dulje čekati nego što je to prvotno bilo planirano.
