Resident Evil 9 bi trebao biti open world igra, barem tako tvrde neslužbeni izvori na X platformi. Cijela teorija oko otvorenog svijeta u nadolazećoj Resident Evil igri je započela izlaskom Dragon’s Dogma 2. Naime, Dragon’s Dogma 2 je prvi Capcomov naslov koji koristi RE Engine za realiziranje igrinog otvorenog svijeta. Primjena takve tehnologije trebala bi uvelike pomoći Monster Hunter Wildu i Resident Evil 9. Iako Resident Evil 9 još nije ni najavljen, ova glasina ipak drži vodu.
Nekoliko najnovijih Resident Evil igara je imalo nešto što se do tada nije pojavljivalo u ovom serijalu. To su naravno opcionalni zadatci koje je imao Resident Evil Village, a isti su bili raspršeni po mapi. S druge strane imamo Resident Evil 4 Remake koji je u nekim dijelovima mape proširio igračevu slobodu kretanja. Sve su to nekakvi mali detalji i naznake o potencijalnom open world sustavu. Ono što nam ulijeva dodatnu nadu u ovu teoriju je činjenica kako Capcom ima iskustva u razvoju igara otvorenog svijeta. Sjetite se samo njihovog Dead Rising serijala.
